Position summary: A self-directed individual who demonstrates the abilities to function as a leader and an advanced practitioner in the Perinatal Service area. Will function in a leadership role in the absence of the manager and/or director. Will be responsible to maintain and build the childbirth education program and lactation programs for Women and Children Services. Acts as a lead coordinator for the Newborn Follow-up Center and lactation services. Promotes through directed education and research the promotion of professional healthcare and consultative services to all providers of direct and non-direct patient care with a clinical focus in obstetrics. Will improve staff knowledge, expertise, and overall clinical outcomes. Acts as a clinical resource in resolving clinical and professional issues in the area of Women and Children Services. Assists management in meeting regulatory requirements for competency of staff, patient-family education and quality outcomes. Directly involved in establishing systems to consistently maintain national standards of care of both ACOG and AWHONN. Will maintain and establish competency needs for all Women and Children Services clinical staff. · Performs and directs nursing procedures, prescribed treatments, based on knowledge of principles and practice of Registered Nurse, Maintains a current , written plan of nursing care or critical pathways for assigned patients.· In accordance with hospital policy, may insert I.V.s. administer I.V. medications, and begin blood product transfusion. Observes and records patient reactions to medication, I.V. therapy, blood transfusion, and treatment.· Collaborates with physician regarding patient progress towards the outcome attainment. Assists physician during treatment and examination of patient and processes orders. Makes appropriate and timely notification to physician on patient condition changes. Receives and transcribes/checks physician's orders in a timely manner.· Provides and documents patient and family education as needed. Communicates clinical outcomes with patient and family.· Assist in the interpretation of hospital policies to co-workers, patients, visitors and students.· May function as a leader of nursing personnel and is responsible for their performance. Communicates with manager regarding patient, staffing, and other clinical/employee issues.· Functions as an effective change agent for standards of practice, care delivery, and technology related issues in Perinatal Care.· Wiliness to identify and or assumes activities relative to the developmental needs of the unit and the nursing department.Participates in the development of breastfeedingguidelines, protocols, and patient education materials.Works as a member of the healthcare team with nurses and physicians.Provides breastfeeding assessment, support, and counseling to inpatients as well as outpatients.Performs lactation consultation:To evaluate breastfeeding To develop a feeding plan based on the individual needs and goals of the breastfeeding mother including appropriate follow-up.Clinical Educator· Collaborates with Women's Services Management Team in the planning and implementation of educational programs.· Collaborates with Women's Services Management Team in the planning and evaluation of the unit specific orientation, competency and education programs.· Responsible for development and oversight of childbirth education classes.· Responsible for development and oversight of Newborn Follow-up center and lactation service.· Develops Healthstream courses; assignments; manages classes; assists staff as needed in utilization of Healthstream· Provides education to staff as needed in regard to policy/procedure/new product changes· Assist in teaching BLS classes· Assist with Meditech education to staff· Provide student orientation

This position is accountable for promoting excellence in Clinical Nursing practice. The incumbent is responsible for knowledge driven outcomes management, advance clinical practice, education to staff, patient, family and to the community. Also, serves as a clinical consultant to staff, hospital administration, physician, patients, family and community.
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Requires current state of Indiana licensure as a Registered Nurse. Certification in area of clinical specialty required with in one year of date of hire., Basic Life Support certification required.
Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Requires a Master of Nursing (MSN).
Requires advanced clinical skills that are typically gained through five to eight years of progressive nursing experience.
Requires knowledge of outcomes management and demonstrated ability practicing outcomes management with a complex patient population.
Requires ability to communication and collaborative effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Requires knowledge of current research methods.
Requires ability to model excellence in advanced clinical practice.
Must demonstrate effective leadership skills and serve as a change agent; including the ability to mentor all members of the multi- disciplinary team.
Basic Life Support certification required.
