Alaska VA Healthcare System and Regional Office - The Alaska VA Healthcare System and Regional Office offers primary, specialty, and mental health outpatient care. Services are provided through a Joint Venture with the United States Air Force on nearby Elmendorf Air Force Base, as well as through fee-based arrangements with community hospitals. Major Duties: This announcement does not cover all the duties/responsibilities of the position.  The incumbent practices as an LPN in the Surgical Service of the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS).   Observes and assesses outpatients using physical examination, verbal and written communication from patients, family and other healthcare team members, monitoring devices, lab and test results, and other data as relevant to patient care.  Provides care to patients for ages 18 through 99.  Administers/implements therapeutic measures as ordered including but not limited to the following:  obtains lab specimens, assists with procedures and treatments, obtains EKG's and oxygen saturations and performs general patient care.  Provides pre-operative and post operative education as directed by the healthcare provider.  Schedules clinic and surgical appointments per scheduling guidelines.  Identifies and responds to both existing and potential emergency situations by initiating corrective treatment and resuscitative measures, based on appropriate utilization of physician orders, unit and facility guidelines, and BLS protocol.  Accurately collects data on patients, administers prescribed medications, documents care accurately, and performs and/or assists with procedures. Qualifications: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. Citizenship. Graduate of a school or practical nursing or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Full, active, current and unrestricted license as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. Meet physical standards for employment. Proficient in written/spoken English.  In addition to meeting the above requirements, must have completed two years of qualifying experience.  Must have the knowledge and skill necessary for concentrated effort and self direction in carrying out the most complex practical nursing care assignments, including assignments for selected acute care, long-term or ambulatory care, or psychiatric patients requiring skilled nursing care.  Serves as a member of a health care team with these selected patients and provides care to them on a regular and recurring basis.  Completes assigned duties and responsibilities which involve performing nonstandard and specialized practical nursing activities requiring broad work experience and demonstrated skill sufficient to resolve a range of nursing problems.  To qualify based on education, submit copy of transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
