Duties:
The Registered Nurse must be able to perform all aspects of the nursing process. Responsibilities include facilitation, communication, assessment, intervention, education, planning and providing comprehensive nursing care for patients, families and significant others. Provides direct and indirect patient care and supervises others providing this care. Performs initial evaluations and screenings of the obstetrical patient to determine the priority of the treatment and identifies life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention of the obstetrical physician/nursing staff and responds accordingly.
Assesses maternal history, allergies, and present status to identify contraindication to specific medications and procedures.
Performs one to one monitoring of the high risk obstetrical patient.
Responds to Cardiac/Respiratory Arrests according to hospital policies and procedures.
Assesses normal pregnancy variations as well as high risk complications and maladaptive behaviors and provide care accordingly.
Performs vaginal examinations to accurately determine cervical dilation, effacement, fetal station, and presenting part.
Differentiates between normal and abnormal rate of cervical effacement and dilatation, and descent of the presenting part, and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.
Monitors uterine activity patterns using palpation and/or the electronic fetal monitor.
Assists in placement and troubleshooting of external and internal monitors.
Performs and documents maternal surveillance, including measures blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations per unit protocol.
Recognizes normal, reactive, non-reactive, non-stress test or positive/negative contraction stimulation test or oxytocin challenge test and implements interventions as needed.
Monitors mother and fetus for desired and deleterious effects of administered medications.
Provides nursing management of Cytotec, dinoprostone cerviacal ripening, and pitocin induction/ augmentation, based on patient status and contractions.
Recognizes the signs and symptoms and provides appropriate nursing intervention for the following obstetrical emergencies; placenta previa, placenta abruptio, prolapsed cord, uterine rupture, inverted uterus, seizures, post partum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, preterm labor.
Provides nursing care and management of preeclamptic patient, DIC, HELLP Syndrome and other life threatening conditions related to preeclampsia.
Administers and manages Magnesium Sulfate IV infusion and assesses for signs of Magnesium Sulfate toxicity and provides appropriate nursing care.
Administers and manages the patient on an insulin infusion.
Assists with anesthesia administration and monitoring of mother/fetus for desired and undesired responses.
Identifies effects and side effects of each method of analgesia and anesthesia and promptly initiates appropriates nursing interventions.

Assists with amniocentesis and ultrasound.
Provides labor and post partum patient teaching including plan of care, episiotomy care, breast care, initiation of breast feeding.
Familiar with charge nurse duties, responsibilities include: monitors and oversees staff performance to assure work is accomplished in a timely and efficient manner.
Makes legible, accurate and complete nursing documentation and ensures the same from staff mentored.
Provides or ensures appropriate patient education occurs during shift.
Reviews and revises nursing care plans as needed.
Verifies and annotates all physicians orders written during the shift.
Notifies attending physicians of significant change in patients conditions in a timely manner.
Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients based on physicians medical care plan, and the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient.
Administers oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusion and prescribed oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, IV medications.
Sets-up, operates and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillator, oxygen monitors, fetal monitors, IV pumps, electrocardiogram machines, blood glucose monitors, syringe pumps, etc.

Respond to all emergency codes, including cardiopulmonary arrests, and summon appropriate backup from the clinical and hospital staff. In these situations, provide professional advice to staff with regard to the professional management of the patient as necessary.
Provide and document advice to patients by telephone as appropriate and in accordance with MACH protocol.
Required Qualifications
RN with one (1) year high risk labor and delivery experience
AND/OR
RN with two (2) years experience in a community hospital with at least 1,000 deliveries per year.
Shall have a BSN degree or greater level of education from a National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited college or university.
Required Skills
Familiar with AHLTA or CHCS for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures and performing other required patient record functions.
Verifying the content and correctness of all prepared and transcribed reports by electronically signing the document and validating its contents within CHCS and AHLTA.
Documenting appropriate history, physical examination, required laboratory and x-ray examinations, and preliminary diagnosis (as appropriate) prior to the performance of any healthcare treatment.
MEPRS code assigned to the clinic appears on all consults, lab requests, x-ray requests, etc. The Department/Service Chief shall provide this code.
Must be able to attend medical and administrative meetings as designated by the Department/Service Chief. Attend any additional special meetings called by the MACH Commander as required to discuss the HCPs credentials, quality control issues, or emergency situations.
