Obtains and documents patient history and performs physical assessment of patient comparing to baseline data. -Starts intravenous access (IV or saline lock) in preparation for the procedure. -May assist with the transport of the patient to the operating room and preparation for the procedure to be performed, including proper positioning and skin preparation. -Assists the anesthesia healthcare practitioners as necessary and provides additional supplies, medications and equipment as needed. -Ensures a clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and takes corrective actions as necessary. -Monitor patients and document vital signs during local procedures as required. -Handles and labels specimens. -Following operative procedure, may transport patient to post anesthesia care unit (PACU) and reports pertinent information to nursing staff to ensure continuity of care. -Performs and documents emergency nursing interventions as needed with documented reassessment after intervention. -Administers medications and documents appropriately. -Maintains adequate airway on unconscious patients. Provides for the patient’s safety until patient’s own reflexes and responses return. -Follows up with post op surgical patients by telephone to assess any possible problems and to answer questions.
