The Operating Room is a direct care unit providing care to the surgical patient during the intraoperative process. Nurses and techs are responsible for ensuring instrumentation and equipment are functional and available, ensuring the sterility of instrumentation and equipment, assist the surgeon and anesthesia to provide for a safe and efficient process. Our OR department consists of both the Main Hospital and ASC locations.
Our main hospital setting currently consists of 6 rooms which will be 7 rooms once our hybrid OR opens. This location includes robotics and open-heart.
Our ASC (ambulatory surgery center) has 6 rooms and is located on the main campus at Arnett Hospital.
Our nurses will be required to care for patients at both locations in our intraoperative services. Our patient population includes general, cardiac, orthopedics, neurology, gynecology, ENT, podiatry, and plastic surgery.
This unit does have an on-call requirement.
Nursing skills gained on this unit:
- Assisting anesthesia during intubation/extubation
- Assisting surgeon during procedure
- Critical care to assist with A-lines, traumas, massive blood loss, cardiac and respiratory arrest
- Caring for patients during malignant hyperthermia crisis
Unit success/designations:
- CNOR certification
- Multiple Daisy awards
- Magnet certification
Unit culture/highlights:
- Collaboration with Indiana Donor Network
- 6-month intensive orientation
- We offer the program Peri-Op 101 through AORN integrated into the orientation.
- RNs can be trained to scrub at our facility once their orientation is complete
- Teamwork with RN and CST/CSFA roles
- Collaboration with hospital units to ensure safe effective care to patient and family
Qualifications
- Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
