Position Summary

The Nurse Supervisor at Child Haven will provide leadership, oversight, and clinical expertise in the delivery of healthcare services to children residing in the shelter. This role involves both direct patient care and administrative leadership, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate medical services. The Nurse Supervisor will work closely with the Medical Director, shelter staff, and external healthcare providers to support the well-being of children with diverse medical and behavioral health needs.

Job Duties

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership & Direct Patient Care:

  • Develop and manage nurse schedules, ensuring appropriate shift coverage to maintain 24/7 nursing services.
  • Responsible for coverage of 24/7 nurses services. In the event that a scheduled shift cannot be covered due to an absence, cancellation, or staffing shortage, every reasonable effort will be made to find a suitable replacement. If no qualified staff member is available to cover the shift, it is the responsibility of the Nurse Supervisor to ensure coverage by stepping in to fulfill the shift duties as needed, in order to maintain continuity of care and patient safety.
  • Develop, manage and maintain the on call nurses schedule to maintain 24/7 nursing services.
  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments, treatment, intakes, discharges, sick visits, medication management and follow-up care for children at the shelter.
  • All documentation must be documented in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Provide preventive care, acute care, chronic disease management, and mental health support to the nurses as appropriate.
  • Available for on-call support to address urgent staffing needs, unexpected absences, or emergencies.
  • Ensure all medical care is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate for children and adolescents.
  • Refer children to FirstMed Pediatric clinic when needed.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, stabilizing patients and coordinating necessary interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant medical records in accordance with federal, state, and shelter regulations.

Program Development & Quality Improvement:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal healthcare regulations, child welfare policies, and infection control guidelines.
  • Track and analyze key health indicators, immunization rates, and medical service utilization for quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with shelter leadership to integrate health services into broader care plans for children and children in crisis.

Supervision & Staff Development:

  • Provide clinical supervision to the nurses, and other healthcare staff.
  • Conduct staff training sessions on topics such as pediatric health, trauma-informed care, medication management, and emergency response.
  • Monitor staff performance, competency, and adherence to medical protocols.
  • Assist in the hiring, orientation, and retention of nursing and healthcare personnel.

Collaboration & Advocacy:

  • Work closely with case managers, social workers, mental health professionals, and external healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for children.
  • Serve as a liaison with hospitals, specialty providers, and community health organizations for referrals and consultations.
  • Advocate for health equity, public health initiatives, and policy changes that improve medical care for children in shelter and foster care settings.

Required Qualifications, Education, and Experience

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing (BSN/MSN) from an accredited program.
  • Active Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in Nevada.
  • Board certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) (preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, foster care, shelters, or behavioral health settings is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of child welfare policies, trauma-informed care, and public health principles.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
