The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in supporting providers and delivering excellent patient care in the urgent care setting. This role combines clinical and frontdesk responsibilities to ensure efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and a positive patient experience from checkin to discharge.
Essential Functions- Register patients and collect required documentation, including insurance verification and eligibility
- Process copays and assist with appointment scheduling
- Coordinate referrals to specialists as directed by providers
- Prepare patients for examination by confirming visit details, collecting medical history, and documenting information in the electronic medical record
- Measure and record vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, height, weight)
- Perform pointofcare testing (e.g., flu, strep, urinalysis, EKG, pregnancy testing) and communicate results to providers
- Draw and process blood specimens for laboratory analysis, as applicable
- Prepare, clean, and stock exam rooms; ensure appropriate inventory of clinical supplies
- Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including scanning and chart management
- Answer phones, manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, and maintain a welcoming reception area
- Conduct patient followup courtesy calls as directed
- Perform opening and closing duties, including cash handling, endofday reconciliation, and securing the facility
- Complete equipment checks, daily controls, calibration, quality assurance logs, and submit repair requests as needed
- Follow all Novant HealthGoHealth policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Graduate of a Medical Assisting program preferred
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical Assistant experience required
- Front desk or patient registration experience preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire
- Must be obtained through the American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA)
For candidates with less than three (3) years of Medical Assistant experience , one of the following certifications is required:
- CCMA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA)
- CMA Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA or CHP)
- RMA Registered Medical Assistant (AMT, AAH, or ARMA)
- NCMA National Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT)
- NRCMA Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)
In lieu of an approved MA certification, candidates may qualify through one of the following pathways:
ExperienceBased Pathway- 3+ years of Medical Assistant experience and
- 1+ year of experience in a Hospital, Emergency Department, or Urgent Care setting
Note: Candidates hired without an approved MA certification must obtain one within 6 months of their start date to remain eligible for continued employment as a Medical Assistant.
Alternative Credentials (Accepted at Time of Hire)- Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing (LPN or RN)
- EMT or Paramedic (NREMT)
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
- CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry) certification must be obtained within two (2) weeks of start date
- Flexibility to work varying shifts between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM , including weekends and holidays, as required
- Proficiency in clinical Medical Assistant duties
- Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems quickly
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fastpaced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to treating all patients and colleagues with fairness, respect, and cultural sensitivity
