Juvenile Services Nurse Supervisor

Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Juvenile Services, is responsible for coordinating the delivery of healthcare services to residents in the care, custody, supervision, and control of Williamson County Juvenile Services including youth in detention, residential programs, JJAEP, and court/field services.

  • Performs all work under the medical license and guidance of the Williamson County Juvenile Services Medical Director
  • Handles and creates work schedules for nursing staff for essential coverage
  • Provides training to nursing staff on new procedures, processes and changes implemented by department leadership
  • Performs performance reviews, makes and recommends personnel changes within department parameters
  • Oversees care provided by nursing staff to ensure guidelines, compliance and processes are followed accurately
  • Collaborates with Juvenile Services staff to coordinate health care services for residents
  • Administers care to residents with acute and chronic illnesses, and manages infectious disease control
  • Creates and manages medical evaluation program
  • Coordinates with psychiatric providers to administer care and manage medications
  • Administers and distributes medications to residents
  • Responds to sick calls, and notifies medical professionals
  • Creates and maintains all medical charts and prepare them for daily use
  • Maintains and secures confidential health record files and completes all necessary documentation, in compliance with departmental policies and procedures
  • Provides residents counseling on personal hygiene and preventative healthcare
  • Serves as medical liaison for juvenile families and medical professionals
  • Assists in crisis interventions and emergency situations
  • Operates departmental or personal vehicles to transport juveniles as needed, and may assist with transportation as a passenger when necessary
  • Assists with coordinating TB testing, physicals and medical exams for each resident
  • Administers juvenile health appraisal assessments
  • Assists with department budget process to ensure funding for department needs
  • Assists with medical audits, by providing statistical data and information when requested
  • Readily complies with departmental and county-wide policies and procedures
  • Performs related special projects as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, repetitive motions, and standing
  • Position involves occasional lifting and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects

IRREGULAR HOURS

  • Includes regular occurring evening and weekend hours and rotating holiday coverage
  • Available for crisis intervention and on-call consultation 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
  • Work schedule and on-call schedule assigned by the Assistant Director of Juvenile Services or designee
  • Essential personnel for emergency situations; discretion of department director

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment
  • Contact with persons accused or adjudicated of crimes
  • Exposure to bodily fluids
  • Constant contact with youth with infections or communicable diseases

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), eligible to practice in the State of Texas
  • Five (5) years of full-time nursing experience OR a Registered Nurse (RN) with 3 years of full-time nursing experience, with at least 2 years of this experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state confidentiality laws as well as any applicable privacy practices required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) pertaining to medical and mental health care information
  • Per Texas Administrative Code Section 344.200, be at least 21 years of age
  • Per Texas Administrative Code Chapter 344.400, have a non-disqualifying criminal history
  • Maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record
  • Experience treating youth for illness and diseases

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

  • Valid State of Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Licensure
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • First aid certification

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

  • Valid Texas drivers license

Required within sixty (60) days of employment

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
  • Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) trained

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid State of Texas Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure
  • Prior experience working as Nurse Supervisor or Lead
  • Prior experience working as nurse in a pediatric, psychiatric, correctional or emergency setting
  • National Certification in Correctional Health Care
