FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To assist in providing healthcare services for the school system.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing designating Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Valid CPR card.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in hospital or community health setting.
  • Valid Alabama driver's license and the ability to have access to appropriate transportation to meet job requirements.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
  • Proficient in assessing vision and other appropriate health screening activities and programs (such as immunization audits).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and school faculties.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, highly intensive work environment.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Provides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures.
  • Refers individuals to the assigned RN as appropriate.
  • Assists students with medications according to approved procedures.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures, as needed.
  • Assists the RN in screening programs and school programs (spinal screening, vision screening, immunization audit, etc.).
  • Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignments.
  • Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  • Demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  • Uses collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment/Salary: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
