The Medical Assistant supports the delivery of coordinated, integrated, and person-centered care within a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC). This role assists prescribers, nurses, and multidisciplinary team members to ensure timely access to services, support whole-person health, and maintain compliance with CCBHC standards. The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties, enhances patient engagement, and helps remove barriers to care for individuals receiving behavioral health, substance use, and primary care support services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepare exam rooms and ensure a safe, trauma-informed, patient-centered clinical environment.
Obtain and record vital signs, patient history, and presenting concerns within the electronic health record (EHR).
Assist prescribers and nursing staff with examinations, procedures, medication administration, and health-related screenings.
Perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) following established protocols.
Monitor patient flow to support same-day access and reduce wait times.
Support care teams in providing integrated physical and behavioral health services.
Follow infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and CCBHC compliance guidelines.
Accurately document all services, screenings, and care coordination efforts in the EHR.
Assist with appointment scheduling, follow-up care, and referral coordination to internal and external providers.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, prescribers, nurses, case managers, and care coordinators.
Support medication management workflows, including refill requests, prior authorizations, and pharmacy communication.
Maintain clinical supplies, monitor inventory, and assist in ensuring compliance with operational standards.
Provide patient education regarding medications, health conditions, follow-up instructions, and wellness strategies.
Assist with health screenings, including those related to physical health conditions commonly impacting behavioral health populations.
Help identify unmet physical or behavioral health needs and relay them to the appropriate care team members.
Promote patient engagement, empowerment, and trauma-informed interactions in all encounters.
Support individuals in navigating care, accessing appointments, and connecting to whole-person services available through the CCBHC.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program preferred.
· Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred.
· CPR/BLS certification required (or obtained within designated timeframe).
· Experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or integrated care setting preferred.
· Understanding of trauma-informed care practices, social determinants of health, and CCBHC service models a plus.
