The Assistant Nurse Manager for the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) leads and manages direct care nursing functions of the CSU team to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.

Key Areas of Responsibilities: Human Resources Management:
  • Hiring: Hires or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
  • Staff Development:
    • Develop and manage the talents, strengths, and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the Nurse Manager.
    • Assists in matters of promotion, transfers, and disciplinary action, as directed by the Nurse Manager.
    • Coaches staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seeks participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
    • Provides staff incentives/rewards for contribution towards achievement of service excellence.
  • Performance Management:
    • Completes staff evaluations for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
    • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Leave Management: Reviews attendance data, recognizes trends and takes appropriate follow-up with staff. Knowledgeable of University of Iowa policies and Federal laws regarding leave and accommodation processes.
  • Employee and Labor Relations:
    • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
    • Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
  • Other:
    • Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customers needs and expectations.
Financial Management:
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit or clinic. Review with nurse leaders financial reports and provide insights to budget variances. Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies.

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in developing a staffing plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.
  • Participate in division-wide budget preparation including calculation of projected costs and expenses.
  • Monitor departmental account expenditures, identify irregularities and recommend corrective action, including P-card purchases, and accounts payable.
Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction:
  • Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement. Implement and maintain standards and quality plans. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.

Patient Care/Services Delivery:
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit. Serve as a resource for patient care problems. May provide some patient care.
  • Assist the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care.

Planning and Goal Management:
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.

  • Invests in own continuous learning and skill enhancement.
Research Administration:
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives.
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
  • Supports changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice.
Percent of Time : 100% Schedule: Monday- Friday, day hours with evenings and weekend hours as necessary. Staff Type: Professional and Scientific Pay Plan:

Education Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
Experience Requirements:
  • 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs).
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments and staff.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice required.
  • Strong clinical assessment/skills.

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam with in two years of start date.
Certification/Licensure Requirements:
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree (MSN, MBA or MHA) preferred.
  • 3+ years of nursing experience in behavioral health.
  • Experience with a large academic medical center.
  • Experience in a union environment.
  • Member/ involvement with professional organizations.
