The Clinical Nurse Educator supports the clinical development and successful transition of newly hired nurses, nurse residents, and experienced nursing staff. This role primarily focuses on the delivery of education and hands-on clinical instruction, ensuring nursing staff develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to provide safe, high-quality patient care. The Clinical Nurse Educator delivers structured educational programs through classroom instruction, simulation, and bedside teaching. The educator provides direct support to nurse residents and new hires, reinforces clinical standards, validates competencies, and facilitates certification courses relevant to assigned clinical areas. Contributes to a positive work environment that promotes HMC values.

Education Delivery and Instruction. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver structured education for clinical and non-clinical staff through classroom lectures, workshops, simulation, and skills labs. Provide bedside teaching and coaching to clinical staff across assigned areas.
  • Provide formal instruction for nursing residents and newly hired nurses and staff during orientation and specialty training. Support new hires and staff during clinical orientation and transition to practice.
  • Facilitate educational sessions that reinforce clinical knowledge, patient safety practices, and organizational standards; reinforce evidence-based practices during patient care activities.
  • Support implementation of education programs developed by the clinical education department.

Competency and Skills Validation. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach and validate clinical skills and procedures relevant to assigned populations.
  • Conduct competency assessments and skills validations for new staff and existing team members.
  • Provide additional instruction and remediation when competency gaps are identified, support annual competency validation and ongoing specialty skills training.

Certification & Specialty Education. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Instruct and/or coordinate certification courses relevant to assigned clinical areas (e.g., resuscitation, life support, or specialty certifications).
  • Maintain instructor qualifications and ensure certification programs align with current standards and guidelines.
  • Support staff in obtaining and maintaining required certifications.

Support of Nurse Residency Programs. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide educational instruction and skills training for nurse residency or transition-to-practice programs.
  • Support participants during their transition into clinical practice or specialty roles.
  • Collaborate with program leaders, managers, and preceptors to support learner development.
  • Provide mentorship and educational guidance to new and transitioning staff.

Clinical Support, Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a clinical resource for staff during complex patient care situations.
  • Partner with clinical leadership, preceptors, and interdisciplinary team members to support staff learning and development.
  • Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, and unit- or department-based education as appropriate.
  • Provide feedback to clinical education leadership regarding identified learning needs and practice gaps.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of education, competency validation, and certification tracking.
  • Support education and competency processes in alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards.

Performs other related duties and special projects, as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, Licenses & Certifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of 45 years of clinical nursing experience within the past 5 years in a relevant patient care setting or specialty area
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license by the Oregon State Board of Nursing
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

For NICU

  • NRP Certification
  • S.T.A.B.L.E within 60 days of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

For Critical Care

  • Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

For Emergency Department

  • Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS)

For Labor & Delivery

  • NRP Certification
  • S.T.A.B.L.E within 60days of hire
  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor or C-EFM

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Competency-based education and skill validation.
  • Clinical Education Standards: ANPD (Association for Nursing Professional Development) Scope and Standards, nurse residency accreditation, and transition-to-practice models.

Skill in:

  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical practice with the ability to translate knowledge into effective education and staff development.
  • Strong teaching and presentation skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Time management, prioritization, attention to detail, and multitasking.
  • Excellent customer service skills including patience, empathy, and problem-solving.
  • Instructing and motivating learners, assigning tasks, and monitoring progress.

Ability to:

  • Provide bedside coaching and clinical instruction.
  • Support the transition of new graduate nurses into specialty practice.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Educate and train staff members on processes and procedures.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate effectively with healthcare team members.
  • Adjust to changing priorities and work demands.
