About Riley Maternity Tower Labor & Delivery
RMT Labor and Delivery is a Level IV perinatal center providing high-level, quality care to all spectrums of the obstetrical patient. RMT Labor and Delivery is comprised of 27 inpatient beds, a 10-bed OB Emergency department, 4 ORs including a fetal surgery suite, HR transport, and a 6-bed PACU. While the focus for our patients' care is obstetric, we take a holistic approach to care of the patients, maternal and fetal, to include complex medical, emotional, and social needs.
Nursing Responsibilities:
As a Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery at Riley Maternity Tower, you will be responsible for:
- Comprehensive Patient Assessment: Performing ongoing, thorough maternal and fetal assessments, including vital signs, pain level, uterine activity, fetal heart rate monitoring, and recognizing and escalating changes in patient condition.
- Labor Management: Providing expert nursing care throughout all stages of labor, including supporting physiological labor, administering and titrating medications (e.g., oxytocin, epidural management), and assisting with various laboring positions and comfort measures.
- Delivery Assistance: Assisting physicians during vaginal and cesarean births, including preparing the delivery field, managing immediate newborn care, and facilitating skin-to-skin contact.
- Postpartum Care: Providing immediate postpartum care to mothers, including fundal checks, perineal assessment, hemorrhage monitoring, and promoting breastfeeding.
- Newborn Care: Performing initial newborn assessments, vital signs, administering medications as ordered, and providing education to parents on newborn care.
- Emergency Response: Rapidly responding to and managing obstetrical emergencies such as hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, and fetal distress, participating in rapid response teams (e.g., OBERT).
- Medication Administration: Safely administering and monitoring the effects of medications, including high-risk infusions and narcotics, adhering to the 5 rights of medication administration.
- Electronic Health Record (EHR) Documentation: Maintaining accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of all patient assessments, interventions, medications, and outcomes in the electronic health record.
- Patient and Family Education: Providing comprehensive education to patients and their families regarding labor progression, pain management options, postpartum care, newborn care, and discharge instructions.
- Emotional Support and Advocacy: Offering compassionate emotional support to patients and families during joyful, challenging, and often vulnerable times, including bereavement support. Advocating for patient needs and preferences.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborating effectively with physicians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, scrub techs, other nurses, and support staff to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
- Maintaining Sterile Technique: Adhering to strict sterile technique during procedures and in the operating room environment.
- Equipment Management: Operating and troubleshooting various medical equipment, including fetal monitors, IV pumps, rapid infusers (e.g., Belmont), and resuscitation equipment.
- Compliance: Adhering to all IU Health policies, procedures, and national patient safety goals.
MUST HAVE at least 1 year of RN experience; experience in OB nursing a plus! BSN preferred.

- Training for US PIV placement, Belmont rapid infuser, OBERT rapid assessment team, and simulation training

Qualifications:
- Requires Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse.
- Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other Advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies (e.g., NRP, ACLS).
